Hayden Hewitt let me watch his extreme horror film, Cara, a few weeks ago. The one I went up to Manchester to shoot a little scene for last year. I have one line early in the film with Johnny Vivash. It’s a hardcore horror and will probably stir up a bit of controversy when it hits festivals later this year, but then, Hayden’s good at controversy. He seems to love it.
Cara showed me what’s possible. Although a bit too dark and extreme for my tastes, I found it inspiring - what you can do on little more than sheer will and ambition - and I find Hayden inspiring too. I’ve known him a long time and he’s always said he wanted to direct a film, then a few years ago he found someone willing to invest in him and he made a few shorts, and pushed for a feature almost straight away. And he did it. I reckon Cara will sell and he’ll be onto the next one. Hayden’s a little older than me and he’s just thought, fuck it, and started in his 50s. I can’t fault him.
In other news, I’m back doing unit move drives for Father Brown now. Did a load last month, and got another tonight. Good money, which is much needed.
